Makeda

Makeda oscillates between aural, physical and curatorial practice, including music, installation / performance art, radio and design.

Sketching a svelte aural palette, she has performed locally and internationally at festivals and clubs including Dark Mofo, RVNG International’s ‘Commend’ store, Cool Room, Soft Centre, the Cité Internationale des Arts, and Bossa Nova Civic - alongside a diverse range of artists including Klein, Oscar Key Sung, Elysia Crampton and Inga Mauer.

Makeda’s J’OUVERT collaboration premiered at Next Wave 2018; and consists of a rotating cast of artists (working between sound, movement, dress, installation) in exploration of the colonial history Trinidad, and its infamous 4am street festival J’ouvert. J’OUVERT was shown at the PRECOG party, an event produced by Makeda alongside curator DJ Sezzo, investigating how marginalised communities come together in the celebratory alternate reality of the club. The party seeks to raise questions about embodiment, direct intuitive relations to the environment, identity and freedom from normative structures.

As a DJ, Makeda started out on Brisbane’s iconic 4ZZZ community station, and has since become a staple (spinning and being spun) on stations including Hope St Radio, Triple J and The Lot NYC and Red Light Radio. The latter station presented a special live from their street window studio, located in Amsterdam’s red-light district. Highlighting the spirit of experimentation and storytelling that carries through to her DJ practice - Makeda’s ‘Red Light Intervention’ presented new material created about sex work from the workers perspective. The show was broadcast to passers-by and online to RLR’s global listener base.
