It’s 1982 and Anna is driving an ocean blue classic Cadillac to meet renowned poet and playwright Deena Metzger in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles. Passing a nondescript desert patch where tall wheat and mustard flowers grow, Anna opens her mouth and sings in a salient stream of rhythmic, melodic sound.
All Are Welcome bakery hosts this special live-taping of Anna Homler in conversation with Ludo Sounds producer, and Liquid Architecture Associate Curator, Cara Stewart to begin and celebrate her Liquid Architecture tour across Australia and New Zealand.
Homler will also be joined by Mark Harwood and Matthew Hopkins who will perform an improvised set.
Homler speaks to the genesis of Breadwoman, a voice developed over three decades of improvised performance: If you don’t try to understand, you will. She is the voice, and the voice is cosmic reality’s musicality. For Homler, performance art is “a form big enough to contain everything happening”.
In conversation with Stewart, Homler introduces her performance collection Pharmacia Poetica; approaches to vocalisation and improvisation; interspersed with sound clips, unreleased material and live demonstrations.
Ludo Sounds is an ongoing podcast series with a focus on female contemporary sound practitioners started in 2015 in collaboration with Entrée Gallery featuring interviews, discussions, collaborations and live performance.
All Are Welcome is a bakery and viennoiserie in Northcote.
