Sonopolis
Art Gallery Rd,
The Domain, NSW
A live immersive performance with dramatically evolved sound environments from cities across the globe from Francisco López. Commissioned by the Studio Akustische Kunst in Cologne in 2011, Sonopolis is a sound piece created by means of a dramatic evolution of original recordings of urban sound environments all over the world, recorded between 1985 and 2010. Spanning more than one hundred cities in the five continents – from Montreal to Ushuaia, from Lisbon to Moscow, from Dakar to Cape Town, from Taipei to Melbourne – López has explored the sonic matter of these urban environments in all their multiplicity and complexity.
Also presented in this event, is New Work by Barbara Ellison. This performance uses and transforms material that Barbara has recorded over periods of time through the use of a handmade telephone pickup coil microphone, which picks up electromagnetic fields. In her performance Barbara will play with sound material detected and recorded using a handmade telephone pickup coil microphone in urban environments (trams , metros and trains). This simple mic picks up all kinds of electromagnetic radiation in its field and for the artist is an endlessly fascinating and playful way to render such inaudible electromagnetic waves audible – a world of the in-between which acts as a net to catch contingency.
Francisco López is supported by the Embassy of Spain, Instituto Cervantes and Emirates.
Barbara Ellison’s work is supported by Stroom, Den Haag, The Netherlands.
This event is a Co-presentation between the Art Gallery of NSW and Liquid Architecture.
