Remember Me: What Remains
Next to Building 122, Royal Parade, near the corner of Tin Alley, Parkville
Remember Me: What Remains_ is a re-presentation of archival field recordings of a frog that has become locally extinct due to loss of habitat caused by human activity.
The call of the Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis) was a once prevalent and highly audible presence throughout metropolitan Melbourne. This early field recording is now housed within the natural science collections at Museum Victoria.
Located in the System Garden at the University of Melbourne, the frog call will be re-presented as an acoustic overlay within the Garden’s original heritage-listed tower. Museum Victoria’s first Director, Frederick McCoy, built the garden to teach evolutionary botany and it continues in its original role as a scientific research facility today.
The frog calls were originally recorded for scientific research by Dr Murray Littlejohn, now Emeritus Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne. His field recordings have been digitised from their original reel-to-reel tape format, enabling access to the sound recordings beyond the museum’s storage facility.
Enjoy the beautiful garden surrounds and experience the extraordinary sounds of the Growling Grass Frog belches and moans of the subterranean sonic city.
