THE GOLEM: HOW HE CAME INTO THE WORLD (Dir: Carl Boese and Paul Wegener, DE, 1920: 85mins) is a silent film, and leading example of early German Expressionism. In the Jewish ghetto in 16th Century Prague, the community leader and astrologer Rabbi Löw’s foresees doom for his people written in the stars. In an attempt to save his people, Löw creates a forbidding clay golem that he brings to life with the assistance of a demon spirit.
