The pūtōrino is a traditional Māori musical instrument. Both a flute and a horn, it is uniquely Māori and not found anywhere else in the world. Its somewhat uncommon shape both embodies the heart of Māori flute culture and heavily influences the nature of its acoustics. Due to the sudden effects of colonisation and modernisation, very little historical or traditional knowledge remains about this intriguing instrument. Join social anthropologist and musician Rob Thorne (Ngati Tumutumu) in a brief exploration of this intriguing and beautiful instrument.
