Sunday afternoon in the studio!

Douglas Kahn from the NIEA in Sydney will be joined by a group of Melbourne artists for a rare set of performances in a relaxed style. For reasons that remain ambiguous we’re calling it Bratty Eraser.

It will start early, at 4pm, until about 8pm. There’ll be an intermission around 6 with vegan food. Details about the artists and their performances are below. Please come and share with your friends.

Kalinda Vary - Perfect Boiled Eggs.
For this performance, Kalinda will devise a piece that responds to recent performance experiences, utilising a mix of stand-up comedy, vocal warm-ups and slam poetry techniques. Kalinda Vary uses performance (both live and pre-recorded) to examine the potentialities of interaction and intersection in relation to humans. Kalinda enjoys collaboration and using visual language. Kalinda graduated from the VCA in 2014 and lives and works in Melbourne.

Matthew P. Hopkins & Julie Burleigh Handel The Handle.
First time collaboration for these two Melbourne artists & music makers. The pair will present a new performance based on George Frideric Handel’s recorder sonatas, and the the text The Handle, by Georg Simmel. Hopefully it will be odd and enchanting. No promises though.

Douglas Kahn: Reagan Speaks For Himself
Douglas Kahn is a Professor at the National Institute for Experimental Arts (NIEA) at the University of New South Wales. He is best known as an historian and theorist of sound and the media arts, but on this singular occasion Douglas will share sounds and stories about his early audiotape cut-ups. Some may be familiar with his Reagan Speaks For Himself, which appeared as a flexi-disc inside Raw magazine in the early 1980s but probably not with the lasagne lunch at Buddy Ebsen’s house when the staunch Republican star of The Beverly Hillbillies found out: “Oh, we were with the Reagans for dinner at the White House just last week.” This infamous sound piece will be just the beginning. Michael Prior & Joanna Anderson will perform with an assortment of metal objects and their own bodies, using their conductivity to shape electronic sounds via the mixing board. Michael and Joanna are both Melbourne artists who make installations, comics and very occasionally, sound performances.
