London-based artist Aura Satz is in Australia exhibiting her new film ‘Between The Bullet and The Hole’ at the 20th Biennale of Sydney. Join her at MADA for a special illustrated talk about her practise, featuring excerpts of various projects, followed by a conversation with Liquid Architecture director Joel Stern.

Satz’s work encompasses film, sound, performance and sculpture. Interested in modes of heightened perception and sensory disorientation such as flicker and psychoacoustics, Satz has used various technologies as the subject of her work, including the Chladni plate, Rubens’ tube, theremin, mechanical music, phonograph grooves, dial tones, drawn/optical sound and early colour film. Her works look at how the physical and sonic properties of such objects tap into ideas of knowledge and communication in their use of notation systems, languages or codes.

She has performed, exhibited and screened at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the Hayward Gallery, Barbican Art Gallery, ICA, the Wellcome Collection, BFI Southbank, Whitechapel Gallery, (London); Oberhausen Film Festival (Oberhausen); Rotterdam Film Festival (Rotterdam); New York Film Festival (NY); Festival du Nouveau Cinema (Montreal); Gallery 44 (Toronto); Gertrude Contemporary (Melbourne); De Appel Art Centre (Amsterdam); Arnolfini (Bristol); Turner Contemporary (Margate); and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead).

Aura Satz
my works explore diagrams and traces; these become abstractions of presence. My previous projects looked at traces of voices, sound inscriptions, and writing techniques. I am primarily interested in traces that look nothing like their source and that give materiality to what is ultimately immaterial or imperceptible
