Battle-ax

Her performances are as much disruptive as they are refined - violist Beatrix Curran alias Battle-ax fills the room with relentless chains of reverb and distortion, generating a strong and emotional soundscape.

Born in Sydney, Battle-ax made a home for herself in Vienna, drawn to its notoriety for classical music. Her sound attributes itself to the richness of late romanticism, clipped by the emergence of atonalism in all its immediacy and resolve. Over the past years, her improvised solo performances have grown to include frequent appearances alongside a number of live musicians and collaborations with electronic artists, such as Jung An Tagen, Forever Traxx and DJ Paypal.

Battle-ax EP Earther/Lysol was released last year on Amen Records and is completing her upcoming debut LP set for 2020.

“Artist and musician Beatrix Curran, aka Battle-ax, has been contextualized in many different ways, but it wasn’t until her viola performance was set in a club venue at a Bliss night [in Vienna], alongside such acts as Hieroglyphic Being or DJ Stingray, that it could unfold its genre- and format-crushing potential." -Natalie Brunner, Flash Art

Experimental violist Sydney-born Beatrix Curran also known as Battle-ax presents her first release Earther/Lysol via Amen. The Vienna-based musician and artist describes the EP as ‘real drinkin’, testing the characteristics of her instrument as a means of escapism and immediacy. Earther, the title track, dynamically shifts between shrill string movements and lumbering atmospheres, accelerated by the use of effect pedals, providing emotional charges throughout the piece. Following the same ingredients is Lysol, a collaboration between Battle-ax and DJ Paypal. released July 27, 2018
